Approved for 4.00 CE hours for CCHI/CEAP and 0.4 CE hours for NBCMI/IMIA.
In this 4-hour online workshop, we will learn intervention strategies to facilitate transparent and efficient communication between patients and providers in remote medical settings. We will study the affordances and constraints of the remote medium compared with in-person interpreting by analyzing real-life interpreting scenarios, going over the different ethical, technical, and linguistic issues that prevent a smooth flow of communication, and offering practical solutions such as scripting and rapport-building that will equip remote interpreters with the soft-skills needed to integrate themselves successfully into the medical encounter.
The workshop is delivered live on Zoom or can be watched as a recording. Students will need to spend 3 hours watching/attending the presentation and at least 1 hour completing the self-paced exercises which are available in the form of audio recordings, PowerPoint slides, and PDFs. In order to obtain a certificate of completion, the student must complete and pass three quizzes with a grade of at least 70%.
